Customer finds maggots in croissant

HARLINGEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) —  The Food Patrol is focusing on one bakery with many issues. Police and lawyers are getting involved because maggots were found in a croissant.

Here is what the Food Patrol found in this week’s Food 4 Thought.

It’s que asco time!

The food patrol is heading to La Reyna Bakery, located at 8302 Texas Highway 107 in San Carlos.

The owners need to answer one question:

"Are these maggots in the croissant?"

This is the evidence from the Hidalgo Health Department and the customer who says she bit a croissant and found bugs.

The official Hidalgo County health inspection report states that on May 29, 2025, the customer bought a ham and cheese croissant. The photo appears to show the moment after the customer took a bite and spat it out.

The customer claims the white spots are the maggots.

On the same day, an inspector from the health department found five violations. After slicing into seven croissants, no maggots were found.

This complaint was not the first time the health department looked into the bakery.

On May 15, two reports found 40 violations.

  • Flies
  • Uncovered food
  • Missing dates and labels

“No corrections have been addressed from the last inspection" was noted in the inspection report.

We showed up 42 days after the maggot inspection to see if the baker had cleaned up.

As the Food Patrol walked in, issues that the health department had already written up could be seen.

  • Baked goods out in the open, feet away from the door
  • Insects on the window

The Food Patrol waited for someone in charge to speak to, but they were busy and did not want to talk.

The owners were not available, and the employees did not have their numbers. The manager on duty did not want to come out and speak.

We allowed the only employee who would talk, take pictures of their inspection reports, and the photos.

“Are you sure that’s ours?!" asked one of the employees.

The employee took photos of each page, so there is no question as to why the Food Patrol is asking questions.

That’s Food 4 Thought!

We still have yet to hear from the bakery management or the owners named in the report.

An incident report has been filed with the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office, which the Food Patrol is waiting for.

The customer and the law firm representing them declined to be interviewed.

Remember that you are a part of the food patrol!

If you see something que asco or gross, take a video, picture, and send it to your local health department.

Send it over to the Food Patrol at News@KVEO.COM.

A message to all the restaurants: The food patrol is always watching!
