Cuellar comments on three top border news stories

LAREDO, Texas – Congressman Henry Cuellar has commented on three of the top border stories – the presidential election in Mexico, President Biden’s executive order on immigration, and presidential permits for international bridges.

On the election of Claudia Sheinbaum as president of Mexico, Cuellar said:

“Congratulations to Claudia Sheinbaum, the first female president-elect of Mexico.

“The United States and Mexico have a strong and historic partnership. Our southern neighbor is a critical trading partner and important to our shared security goals.

“Congratulations to the other candidates as well for participating in the democratic process. Democracy must remain strong in Mexico.”

President Biden’s new executive order bars migrants who cross without papers from seeking asylum – a departure from decades-long protocol – once a daily threshold is met.

Cuellar said he is supportive of the measure.

“I have been advocating for these measures for years because they will bring relief to our border communities who have been on the frontline of this humanitarian crisis.

“While this executive order is a step in the right direction, we must continue to support our border communities and federal law enforcement at the border by proving additional technology, equipment, personnel, and resources to effectively address the uptick in irregular migration.

“We also need to continue working with Mexico to ensure they help stop illegal migration before it gets to our border.

“We must also ensure we treat migrants with dignity and respect.”

President Biden also granted presidential permits related to existing and new international bridges along the Rio Grande. One of these – the World Trade Bridge – is in Cuellar’s hometown of Laredo. He said:

“Bridges are an economic lifeline for our border communities – they encourage international trade, commerce, and tourism.

“The approval of a Presidential permit for the World Trade Bridge Expansion is a big achievement for South Texas and will ensure continued prosperity for border communities.

“I want to thank Senator Ted Cruz for working alongside me to secure language to expedite the Presidential permit process.”
