BROWNSVILLE, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The Brownsville Fire Marshal's office is investigating a fire at the historic El Jardin Hotel that occurred Wednesday afternoon.
At approximately 2:35 p.m., the Brownsville Fire Department responded to a fire report at the location of 1100 East Levee Street.
According to Brownsville FD, crews came across a heavy fire load in an exterior trash area in the back of the building.
Brownsville FD's spokesperson says the crews were able to control the fire, and only minimal damage was reported, preventing the loss of several million dollars in property.
The El Jardin hotel is currently under renovation by the Housing Authority of the City of Brownsville (HACB) to restore the former hotel into affordable housing for lower-income families.
