MCALLEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The City of McAllen and Reliant Energy on Thursday launched three Beat the Heat Cooling Centers.
As temperatures rise in the Rio Grande Valley, cooling centers will provide a safe, air-conditioned space where residents can rest and cool off while enjoying water, snacks, and activities. Resources and information will be available to help residents stay cool at home while conserving energy.
"We know that during the summer down here, it gets extremely hot, and it can be dangerous," said McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos. "To us, one of the most important things is the health and safety of our residents. We're very glad to partner up with Reliant Energy and assist our community with 250 fans and a $5,000 donation to assist some residents with their utility bills.
