The Coast Guard detained 16 Mexican fishermen and seized approximately 2,500 pounds of fish off of South Padre Island Tuesday night.
In a news release, the Coast Guard said boat crews and aircrews detected and interdicted four lanchas engaged in illegal fishing.
The fishermen were taken into custody and turned over to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
Authorities also seized fishing gear and equipment on board the vessels.
“Two of the lanchas were also seized, while two were marked and left adrift due to flooding and instability,” the release stated.
