City of Roma: Failed requirements lead to boil water notice

ROMA, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The City of Roma has issued a boil water notice after failing to meet requirements at the Water Treatment Plant since August 2023, the city announced.

According to Roma, the city's water system had a combined filter effluent turbidity above 5.0 NTU.

The United States Geological Survey defines turbidity as the clarity of a liquid, ranging from clear water quality to cloudy.

Turbidity is measured in Nephelometric Turbidity Units (NTU). These bottles show various turbidity levels. (USGS)

Roma's 5.0 turbidity reading can interfere with water disinfection and result in microbial growth.

"Turbidity may also indicate the presence of disease-causing organisms," the City of Roma announced.

Residents are asked to boil their water for a minimum of two minutes prior to consumption or use.

"To ensure destruction of all harmful bacteria and microbes, water for drinking, cooking, and making ice should be boiled and cooled prior to use," the city said.

Roma water system officials will notify residents of any updates regarding the water notice.
