EDINBURG, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The City of Edinburg recognized 30 high school seniors for their commitment to enlist in the military.

The students were honored Tuesday evening during the Edinburg City Council Meeting.

Three of the students were recognized for earning appointments to the nation's prestigious U.S. service academies, including the Air Force Academy, Naval Academy, and U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

Additionally, the city recognized 27 graduating seniors who have enlisted directly into the U.S. Armed Forces.

"These young men and women represent the very best of Edinburg," said Mayor Ramiro Garza Jr.

According to the U.S. Department of Defense, less than 1% of Americans currently serve in the military.

"We are deeply proud of their commitment to our country and look forward to honoring them in front of our community," Garza said.
