EDINBURG, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Drainage improvements are underway in the City of Edinburg.

City leaders gathered Tuesday morning to celebrate the official start of the Chapin Pumps Rehabilitation Drainage Improvements Project.

The project was facilitated through city resources and a $1 million grant from the Texas General Land Office.

"With heavy rains, this [project] can allow for water to freely move with the new pump system and stay retained in this area, and protect and keep it off the streets and off people's homes and businesses," said Edinburg Mayor Ramiro Garza Jr.

Garza says the improvements will have a direct impact on approximately 500 acres surrounding the Chapin area and the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.

"It's just part of our commitment to help improve drainage in our community," Garza continued.

Construction is expected to be complete by summer 2026.
