Checks starting to arrive for Valley farmers under drought relief funding package

MISSION, Texas – Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller and U.S. Rep. Monica De La Cruz recently held a press conference to announce drought relief funding for Rio Grande Valley farmers through the 1944 Water Treaty Agricultural Assistance Program.

The event was held at the offices of Texas Citrus Mutual in Mission.

The first checks issued went to farmers Dale Murden and Frank Schuster. Murden is president of Texas Citrus Mutual.

The total drought relief package is worth $280 million.

“The $280 million in funding is critical for Texas farmers and ranchers after suffering severed losses due to the Government of Mexico’s refusal to comply with the 1944 Water Treaty,” De La Cruz said.

Schuster is owner of Val Verde Vegetable Company. He farms on land south of San Juan, Alamo, and Donna. After the press conference ended the Rio Grande Guardian secured this interview with Schuster:
