Census Bureau unveils the latest population estimates for Rio Grande Valley cities

EDINBURG, Texas – The fastest growing cities in the Rio Grande Valley over the past four years are Alton, Bayview, La Joya, Rio Hondo, La Villa, Weslaco, Hidalgo, and Edinburg.

All eight of these cities grew by more than eight percent between 2020 and 2024, according to the latest U.S. Census Bureau population estimates.

When comparing cities with a population of over 100,000 Edinburg is 25th in the nation and tenth in the state of Texas for the fastest growth over the past two years. The city’s population rose from 105,956 in 2023 to 108,733 in 2024—an increase of 2.62%. 

“Edinburg is a city on the rise,” said Mayor Ramiro Garza Jr. “This continued growth reflects the strength of our community and the results of our focused investments in quality of life, infrastructure, and economic opportunity.”

Here are the population estimate statistics from the Census Bureau:

Alamo, up 6.03 percent – from 19,516 in the April 1, 2020 base estimate, to 20,694 in the 2024 estimate.

Alton up 25.67 percent – from 18,227 in the April 1, 2020 base estimate, to 22,907 in 2024 estimate.

Bayview, up 17.83 percent – from 471 in the April 1, 2020 base estimate, to 555 in 2024 estimate.

Brownsville, up 3.00 percent – from 186,361 in the April 1, 2020 base estimate, to 191,967 in 2024 estimate.

Donna, 0.39 percent – from 16,810 in the April 1, 2020 base estimate, to 16,876 in 2024 estimate.

Edcouch, down 3.26 percent  – from 2,781 in the April 1, 2020 base estimate, to 2,693 in 2024 estimate.

Edinburg, up 8.39 percent – from 100,316 in the April 1, 2020 base estimate, to 108,733 in 2024 estimate.

Elsa, up 1.28 percent – from 5,677 in the April 1, 2020 base estimate, to 5,750 in 2024 estimate.

Escobares, up 0.34 percent – from 2,580 in the April 1, 2020 base estimate, to 2,589 in 2024 estimate.

Granjeno, up 1.40 percent – from 285 in the April 1, 2020 base estimate, to 289 in 2024 estimate.

Harlingen, up 0.34 percent – from 71,989 in the April 1, 2020 base estimate, to 72,234 in 2024 estimate.

Hidalgo, up 8.59 percent – from 13,964 in the April 1, 2020 base estimate, to 15,164 in 2024 estimate.

Indian Lake, up 5.58 percent – from 841 in the April 1, 2020 base estimate, to 888 in 2024 estimate.

La Feria, up 2.46 percent – from 6,867 in the April 1, 2020 base estimate, to 7,036 in 2024 estimate.

La Grulla, down 0.16 percent – from 1,239 in the April 1, 2020 base estimate, to 1,237 in 2024 estimate.

Laguna Vista, up 7.51 percent – from 3,526 in the April 1, 2020 base estimate, to 3,791 in 2024 estimate.

La Joya, up 15.38 percent – from 4,445 in the April 1, 2020 base estimate, to 5,129 in 2024 estimate.

La Villa, up 13.33 percent – from 2,805 in the April 1, 2020 base estimate, to 3,179 in 2024 estimate.

Los Fresnos, up 5.04 percent – from 8,152 in the April 1, 2020 base estimate, to 8,563 in 2024 estimate.

Los Indios, up 2.86 percent – from 1,013 in the April 1, 2020 base estimate, to 1,042 in 2024 estimate.

Lyford, down 2.26 percent – from 2,259 in the April 1, 2020 base estimate, to 2,209 in 2024 estimate.

McAllen, up 4.63 percent – from 142,188 in the April 1, 2020 base estimate, to 148,782 in 2024 estimate.

Mercedes, up 7.82 percent – from 16,262 in the April 1, 2020 base estimate, to 17,535 in 2024 estimate.

Mission, up 3.24 percent – from 85,789 in the April 1, 2020 base estimate, to 88,574 in 2024 estimate.

Palmhurst, up 0.03 percent – from 2,601 in the April 1, 2020 base estimate, to 2,602 in 2024 estimate.

Palm Valley, down 4.01 percent – from 1,409 in the April 1, 2020 base estimate, to 1,353 in 2024 estimate.

Palmview, up 1.21 percent – from 15,837 in the April 1, 2020 base estimate, to 16,030 in 2024 estimate.

Penitas, up 1.59 percent – from 6,465 in the April 1, 2020 base estimate, to 6,568 in 2024 estimate.

Pharr, up 1.76 percent – from 79,731 in the April 1, 2020 base estimate, to 81,142 in 2024 estimate.

Port Isabel, up 3.66 percent – from 5,026 in the April 1, 2020 base estimate, to 5,210 in 2024 estimate.

Progreso, up 7.62 percent – from 4,815 in the April 1, 2020 base estimate, to 5,182 in 2024 estimate.

Progreso Lakes, up 7.00 percent – from 257 in the April 1, 2020 base estimate, to 275 in 2024 estimate.

Raymondville, down 1.09 percent – from 10,227 in the April 1, 2020 base estimate, to 10,107 in 2024 estimate.

Rio Grande City, up 1.12 percent, from 15,354 in the April 1, 2020 base estimate, to 15,526 in the 2024 estimate.

Rio Hondo, up 13.84 percent – from 2,030 in the April 1, 2020 base estimate, to 2,311 in 2024 estimate.

Roma, up 0.77 percent – from 11,546 in the April 1, 2020 base estimate, to 11,635 in 2024 estimate.

San Benito, down 0.61 percent – from 24,865 in the April 1, 2020 base estimate, to 24,712 in 2024 estimate.

San Juan, up 5.70 percent – from 35,325 in the April 1, 2020 base estimate, to 37,341 in 2024 estimate.

San Perlita, up 1.49 percent – from 535 in the April 1, 2020 base estimate, to 543 in 2024 estimate.

Santa Rosa, down 4.05 percent – from 2,462 in the April 1, 2020 base estimate, to 2,366 in 2024 estimate.

South Padre Island, no change – from 2,076 in the April 1, 2020 base estimate, to 2,076 in 2024 estimate.

Sullivan City, down 0.10 percent – from 3,904 in the April 1, 2020 base estimate, to 3,900 in 2024 estimate.

Weslaco, up 9.12 percent – from 40,195 in the April 1, 2020 base estimate, to 43,864 in 2024 estimate.

Here are the stats for Laredo:

Laredo, up 2.37 percent – up from 255,211 in the April 1, 2020 base estimate, to 261,260 in 2024 estimate.
