WESLACO, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The Weslaco Lady Panthers paraded downtown Weslaco to celebrate their softball state championship.

The Lady Panthers became the first softball program to win a state title from the Rio Grande Valley after Andrea Ortiz's heroics in the bottom of the 7th inning.

Hundreds of people throughout the RGV lined the streets of Texas Boulevard to show their support for Weslaco.

Autographs and picture opportunities followed the parade. While it has been a week for the Lady Panthers to take in the state title, many of them are still in shock.

Senior outfielder Ema Galvan said, "I'm trying to gain a sense of it all because it hasn't really hit me that we won State. I know we won, but I don't know. I think it's just too big of an accomplishment that it hasn't wrapped around my head fully."

Weslaco knew the community would show an outpour of support after the state championship victory. However, they did not realize just how big it would be.

Not only is the community of Weslaco celebrating the champions, the entire RGV is.

"It's been amazing knowing that the community is behind us," sophomore designated hitter Clarissa Mejia said. "Not just our Weslaco community, but the whole RGV."
