LOS FRESNOS, Texas (ValleyCentral) — A son is facing felony charges after he allegedly confessed to physically abusing his 89-year-old mother, the Cameron County Sheriff's Office said Wednesday.
Hugo Garza Leal, 58, was arrested Tuesday on charges of injury to elderly person causes serious bodily injury, a first-degree felony, and injury to an elderly person causes bodily injury, a third-degree felony, according to a news release from CCSO.
On Oct. 2, Cameron County deputies spoke with Adult Protective Services caseworkers who made a report of elder abuse involving an 89-year-old woman from Los Fresnos.
According to the release, the woman reported details to deputies about how her son, identified as Leal, had been physically abusing her.

The case was later assigned to Sheriff's Investigators, who then collected victim statements and witnesses, as well as photographs and other forms of evidence.
Authorities say Leal assaulted and injured his mother on different occasions, once by hitting her with his fists and another when he used a wire.
On Tuesday, Sheriff's investigators obtained two arrest warrants for Leal and arrested him.
Leal was taken to the sheriff's office, where authorities say he provided a voluntary statement and "confessed to Sheriff's Investigators how he physically abused his mother," according to the news release.
Leal was transported and booked into the Carrizales Rucker Detention Center, where he is pending an arraignment.
In the news release, the Cameron County Sheriff's Office encouraged citizens to report any signs of family violence or elder abuse to law enforcement.
