BROWNSVILLE, Texas (ValleyCentral) — A former Brownsville Independent School District teacher accused of having an improper relationship with a student appeared in court last week.
On Oct. 16, Julio Ricardo Trujillo, who is charged with three counts of improper relationship between a student and a teacher, had a scheduled court appearance.
Trujillo's attorney appeared in court on his behalf; however, both the state and the defendant agreed to reset the case to a later date, according to the Cameron County court documents.
Trujillo has a status hearing at 8:30 a.m. on Nov. 12 at the 197th District Court.

Background
An affidavit obtained by ValleyCentral details that on May 5, a victim was interviewed by Cameron County Children Advocacy Center-Monica’s House and told investigators that on April 14, Trujillo, who was employed by Rivera High School as a teacher and Girls Basketball Coach, asked her to meet him in a classroom.
Footage from the school revealed that at 11:29 a.m., Trujillo was seen standing by the door of the classroom before entering. The 19-year-old student was seen walking into the classroom a minute later. After, she is seen walking back to her classroom while fixing her blouse.
At 11:45 a.m., Trujillo sent the student a message stating, “It finally happened, I loved it even if we had to rush lol,” the affidavit alleges.
The 19-year-old student told authorities she recalled that sometime after Easter, Trujillo picked her up and took her to a nearby park to engage in sexual acts in his vehicle on two occasions, the affidavit indicates.
On May 15, 2025, Trujillo was arrested by the Cameron County District Attorney’s Office Special Investigations Unit in collaboration with Brownsville Independent School District police on a charge of an improper relationship between an educator and a student.
According to a previous ValleyCentral report, the arrest was a result of an investigation into several employees of the district. A statement from the district at the time said that the educators allegedly involved in this criminal investigation are affiliated with Rivera Early College High School and Hanna Early College High School.
Julio Ricardo Trujillo was listed as a Criminal Justice System/Principles of Law teacher and Girls Basketball Coach at Rivera Early College High School at the time of the offense.
The district fired Trijullo in May.
On Sept. 9, 2025, Trujillo pleaded not guilty to three counts of improper relationship between educator and student.
