EDINBURG, Texas (ValleyCentral) — State Representative Terry Canales sent Governor Greg Abbott a letter on Wednesday requesting greater assistance addressing the Lower Rio Grande Valley’s critical water challenges, according to Canales's office.

In his letter, Canales specifically cited Texas Government Code Section 418.014, the Governor’s ability to declare an emergency, and Section 418.015, the Governor’s ability to authorize all available state resources.

Rep. Canales issued a statement:

The Rio Grande Valley can not continue to rely on luck to ensure there is enough water for our region’s farmers and residents. The time to act is now. Our area’s only path forward is greater collaboration on a regional approach to securing new water sources. This will require concerted effort and coordination among irrigation districts, water providers, and area leaders, and I believe that with the Governor’s support, we can work together to pave the way for a sustainable and secure water future for our region.
