Cameron County Irrigation places heavier water restrictions

CAMERON COUNTY, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Cameron County Irrigation Officials are facing record lows and water shortages during the drought.

Only farmers and others with eligible accounts are allowed access to allocated water.

Eligible accounts include those who used water within the last two years, but others can still apply if they need irrigation water.

The last time they allowed those accounts to buy water was last summer.

"Unless we see something that comes out of Mexico, or we have some sort of a major rain event that works its way up the Rio Grande River and fills up the dams, we're in a really bad place," said Craig Harmon, General Manager for Cameron County Irrigation District 2.

Some Cameron County cities already have restrictions in place limiting water usage.
