BROWNSVILLE, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The Cameron County Commissioners Court has approved an interlocal agreement with the city of Brownsville to support revitalization in downtown Brownsville.

The Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone No. 3, or TIRZ No. 3, will allow both the county and city to contribute to funding of targeted infrastructure upgrades, historic preservation, and attraction of new retail, hotel, and commercial development, according to a news release.

TIRZ No. 3 encompasses designated areas from Sam Perl Boulevard to Gladys Porter Zoo.

"This partnership marks a major milestone in our ongoing efforts to collaborate across local government to strengthen economic development in Cameron County," said Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño Jr. "By supporting the city of Brownsville's vision for a vibrant and thriving downtown, we`re investing in the future of our community, creating jobs, and improving the quality of life for our residents."

Mayor John Cowen, Jr. of Brownsville stated, "By working together as One City, we are making long-term investments in the revitalization of the heart of our downtown, ensuring Brownsville becomes a vibrant hub for culture, dining, and entertainment."

Cameron County's involvement in TIRZ No. 3 is expected to go into effect this year, with planning and implementation already underway.
