BROWNSVILLE — Brianna Barnes’ dreams of playing college hoops began not long after picking up her first basketball as a young child.
She officially turned those dreams into a reality on Wednesday alongside her family and friends by signing a national letter of intent to play college basketball at Coastal Bend College.
Coastal Bend College is located in Beeville, Texas and is a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).

“Today means a lot to me. It just shows how much hard work I’ve put into basketball,” Barnes said. “It’s been my dream since I was a little girl and my dream is finally coming true. Today is just an exciting and memorable day.”
Barnes is a three-year letterman and was named District 32-6A’s Co-Most Valuable Player after a strong senior campaign. The guard set career-highs across the board this past season by averaging 10.1 points, 5.2 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2.4 steals per game.
Barnes was part of two district championship teams and helped lead the Chargers to three straight 30-win seasons. Brownsville Veterans also won three playoff games during her three years.

“This team, Coach (Arnold) Torres, they’ve always been very open-armed with me and taught me so much that I didn’t know I was able to learn,” Barnes said. “All the teammates I’ve met here, they’ve helped me with more than just basketball and taught me basketball is more than just a sport.”
Barnes decided on Coastal Bend College due to a good relationship with the coaching staff and plans to study to become a physical therapist.
“Their coaches have always been welcoming to me and I just like the environment of the campus and I think I’ll fit in well,” she said. “They’ll be getting a very enthusiastic player that just wants more. I want to be the best teammate I can, have open arms, and push everybody to be the best they can while pushing myself.”
