BROWNSVILLE, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Superintendent Jesus Chavez of the Brownsville Independent School District is addressing school safety concerns following the arrest of a coach from Rivera Early College High School.
Julio Ricardo Trujillo, 43, was terminated Tuesday night during a special school board meeting.
Trujillo is accused of having sex with a 19-year-old student.
ValleyCentral spoke with Chavez about rebuilding trust and safety policies.
Chavez said policies at the district are clear, especially when it comes to students' safety.
"If there are folks that are not treating our students right, or if there are folks out there that are mistreating our teachers, we are going to take action," Chavez said. "Our community needs to understand we are very aggressive about taking action."
Chavez said the district is working to reassure parents about their child's safety.
"We want great behavior from our employees. If that is not happening, we will take whatever appropriate action. It may be up to termination, yes, the involvement of police, and up to termination, we are very committed to that," Chavez continued.
The Brownsville ISD superintendent says he has an open-door policy to encourage students, parents, and anyone who suspects improper behavior to speak up.
