BROWNSVILLE, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Security First Credit Union and Texas Regional Bank are partnering with the Brownsville Independent School District to sponsor a new program that will provide hands-on banking experience for students.

The 11-week program will be available to Brownsville ISD seniors to prepare students for entry-level positions in the credit union and banking industry.

Andy Reed, CEO of Security First Credit Union, says that students will have the opportunity to learn banking literacy from teller operations and information security to finances and lending operations.

"They're going to get a broad focus of what the business is like," Reed said.

The program will be led by the Security First executive team.

"They're going to get a broad perspective on what banking really is and how banks work and how credit unions work, how they're similar, how they're different, but also hopefully leave with a little bit more financial expertise," Reed continued.

Six students are currently enrolled in the program, with a goal of 20 students for next year's cohort.

Reed hopes the program will expand to other school districts across the Rio Grande Valley.

"I can see it being very large. Other school districts can pick it up," Reed said. "The more people have access to financial literacy and education and how this business works, the better off we're all as a society."
