BROWNSVILLE, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The Brownsville Independent School District has partnered with a non-profit to open a youth fitness center.
Administrators and PHIT America partners celebrated the grand opening of the first PHIT Center in the world at Garden Park Elementary School.
The new facility is part of the Brownsville Healthy Kids' Campaign to enhance youth wellness and physical education.
"We're overcoming and fighting a major pandemic called the inactivity pandemic. Kids are not moving like they used to and it affects their physical and mental health," said Jim Baugh, founder of PHIT America.
The new center features stations for youth to practice track and field, tennis, pickleball and golf skills.
"We want to get every kid in Brownsville more active, fit and healthy," Baugh continued.
Brownsville ISD is working with PHIT America to incorporate physical activity centers in all 31 of its elementary schools.
"We extend our gratitude to PHIT America for supporting Brownsville ISD’s mission to graduate students who are prepared to thrive both physically and mentally," said Brownsville ISD Superintendent Jesus Chavez. "Together, let's position Brownsville ISD as the forefront leader committed to elevating children's health nationwide!"
