BROWNSVILLE, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating a one-vehicle crash that claimed the life of a man.
At approximately 1 a.m. on Monday, DPS troopers responded to a crash on FM 3248 near Dr. Hugh Emerson Road in Brownsville, according to a news release from Texas DPS.
A preliminary investigation revealed that a 2004 black Chevrolet Silverado, occupied by a man, who was the driver, and a woman, who was the passenger, was going westbound on FM 3248 while racing a Chevrolet Camaro.
DPS says that the driver of the Chevy Silverado lost control, veered to the right, slid on its side, and collided with a utility light pole.
The passenger of the Chevy Silverado was taken to Valley Regional Medical Center in Brownsville, where she is reported to have sustained serious injuries.
The driver of the Chevy Silverado, identified as 27-year-old Ramiro Torres from Brownsville, died from his injuries at the scene.
On Monday evening, Brownsville ISD released a statement following Torres' passing.
Torres was a security officer at Manzano Middle School.
“Mr. Torres was a respected member of our school community, valued for his commitment, professionalism, and the positive relationship he built with students, staff, and families. His loss is deeply felt,” the statement reads. “Our thoughts are with Officer Torres’ family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time. We ask for respect and privacy for the family as they grieve.”
