Brownsville city manager announces resignation

BROWNSVILLE, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Brownsville City Manager Helen Ramirez announced her resignation at a city commission meeting on Tuesday.

Ramirez began her career with the city of Brownsville in 2019 as Deputy City Manager before becoming the city's first woman city manager in 2022.

Ramirez decided to resign to spend more time with family due to medical circumstances, according to a news release from the city of Brownsville.

"I am deeply proud of what we have accomplished together, as one city, in Brownsville," Ramirez said in the news release. "Through the visionary leadership of Mayor John Cowen Jr., and the steadfast support of our city commission, we have transformed Brownsville into a city of opportunity, collaboration, and innovation."

Brownsville Mayor John Cowen states that during Ramirez's tenure as city manager, Brownsville has achieved numerous milestones and undergone significant transformations.

"Helen Ramirez has led Brownsville through one of the most transformative periods in our city's history," Cowen said. "Her leadership, professionalism, and vision have set the foundation for a strong and prosperous future for our community. We thank her for her dedicated service and wish her and her family the best."

Ramirez's last day will be on December 19.

Brownsville city commissioners will name an Interim City Manager following Ramirez's departure.
