In observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is recognized in October, DHR Health Oncology Institute will be hosting a “Walk and Talk with a Doc,” event.
The free event will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 2, at the DHR Health Heart Institute parking lot which is located at 5525 Doctors Drive in Edinburg.
Before the walk kicks off attendees will hear from Dr. Jose Cruz, a board-certified medical oncologist and hematologist; Dr. Cera Kroenke, a board-certified general surgeon and Dr. Lyuba Levine, a dual board-certified gynecologic oncologist who will talk about the importance of prevention, early detection and treatment options for breast and gynecological cancers.
Breast cancer is both the second most common type of cancer among women in the U.S. and the second leading cause of cancer death among women, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Data from the CDC showed that in 2022 alone there were a total of 279,731 cases of breast cancer in women and a total of 42,213 breast cancer related deaths in 2023.
For Cruz, this walk gives them an opportunity to emphasize the importance of prioritizing one’s health.
“Breast cancer is most treatable when it’s found early, which is why education and awareness are so important,” Cruz said in a news release. “By coming together as a community to walk and talk, we can empower one another with the knowledge and encouragement needed to take proactive steps for our health.”
After the presentation, attendees will have the opportunity to speak with the physicians during the 1-mile walk. The goal of the walk is not just to support those fighting breast cancer but also to promote physical activity, education and present available resources to the community.
The event will also feature giveaways and information booths about mammography and breast health as well as a mini-activity area for kids that will feature a special appearance from Dr. Ted E. Bear, DHR Health’s mascot.
