BPD: Man arrested at Gateway Bridge for theft of motor vehicle

BROWNSVILLE, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Brownsville police arrested a man at the Gateway International Bridge for theft of a motor vehicle on Monday, according to police.

Around 3 a.m. Brownsville Police Patrol Officers responded to a call on the 2400 block of E. Price Rd. for a theft of a white 2019 Chevrolet Blazer.

The man had broken a window to gain access to the vehicle and drove away without the owner's consent, according to police.

The man was identified as Matthew Sanchez Caballero, 18. He crossed the vehicle into Mexico where he evaded Mexican authorities. He was apprehended and taken into Mexican custody.

The Brownsville Police Auto Theft Unit investigated this theft and secured an arrest warrant for Caballero. He was then arrested at the bridge as he crossed back into Brownsville, authorities stated.

Caballero was arraigned and issued a $20,000 bond.
