BROWNSVILLE, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The City of Brownsville's Multimodal Transportation Department is introducing a new way to pay for trips using your phone.

The mobile fare and smart card system allow travelers to avoid having to pay in cash and more easily board the bus.

This is a big step forward for BMetro travelers as it makes it more convenient and streamlines boarding for users.

For the entire month of July, passengers can collect fee unloaded Smart Cards at La Plaza at the Brownsville Terminal, located at 755 International Blvd.

The smart cards can be loaded with up to $100 and starting August 1, unloaded smart cards will be sold for $5.

"We are excited to introduce the official launch of Mobile Fare and Smart Card options," said Gennie Garcia, Deputy Director of the Multimodal Transportation Department. "This will allow users and passengers a more efficient and easy way to pay bus fares. The collaboration with Transit Manager Simon Ortiz and the team has helped make this happen. We are pleased that we can introduce another payment option to our passengers."
