BISD teacher given $150K bond, issued protective order in case with student

BROWNSVILLE, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Julio Ricardo Trujillo, the man accused of having an improper relationship between a teacher and student, was arraigned Friday morning.

Trujillo, 43, was issued a $150,000 bond for a second-degree felony offense of improper relationship between an educator and student.

Trujillo appeared before a Cameron County Judge Friday morning handcuffed and in an orange jumpsuit. If convicted of his charges, Trujillo faces up to 20 years in a Texas Department of Corrections facility with a maximum fine of up to $10,000. If convicted he is looking at no less than two years in a corrections facility.

Once released on bond, the judge ordered that Trujillo be issued a protective order for 91 days against the victim in this case and her family.

Additionally, Trujillo must limit his travel to be within Cameron County and is prohibited from going within 200 feet of any schools, with an emphasis on Rivera Early College High School, and any areas where children may congregate such as arcades and parks.

He is required to wear an electronic monitor and has been given a curfew. Trujillo is required to be home between the hours of 9 p.m. and 9 a.m.

As previously reported by ValleyCentral, Trujillo was arrested Thursday on a warrant that found probable cause in the case.

The arrest comes as a result of an investigation into several employees of the district who are allegedly involved. A statement from BISD reads that other employees have been fired or are on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

BISD states that the educators allegedly involved in this criminal investigation are affiliated with Rivera Early College High School and Hanna Early College High School.

Trujillo is listed as an a Criminal Justice System/Principles of Law teacher at Rivera Early College High School, according to the school website.

Trujillo has not been released on bond.
