BROWNSVILLE, Texas (ValleyCentral) – The Brownsville Independent School District has announced an update regarding after-school programs.
On Monday evening, BISD released a statement saying federal education funds have been restored, which will allow all campuses to resume their regular schedules for after-school programs.
The statement read the following:
"The Brownsville Independent School District has received an important update from the Texas Education Agency, which was notified by the U.S Department of Education regarding federal education funding allocations for fiscal year 2025."
The notice of Grant Award was issued for the following federal programs:
- Title I, Part C - Migrant Education
- Title II, Part A - Supporting Effective Instruction
- Title III, Part A - English Language Acquisition
- Title IV, Part A - Student Support and Academic Enrichment
- Title IV, Part B - Nita M. Lowey 21st Century Community Learning Centers
- Adult Basic and Literacy Education
"With the restoration of these critical funds, BISD is excited to announce that all campuses will resume their regular extended day programming."
- Non-ACE campuses will operate Monday through Thursday, from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
- ACE campuses will operate Monday through Friday from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
"These programs are vital in supporting academic success, family engagement, and student well-being," said Superintendent Dr. Jesus H. Chavez.

On Thursday, July 17, BISD released a statement about a revised schedule for its after-school program due to federal education budget reductions following the recent passage of the "Big Beautiful Bill".

BISD Academies were only going to operate Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at participating elementary campuses.
Affected federal funding sources include:
- Title I-C: Migrant Education: Support for disadvantaged migrant students ($321,000)
- Title II-A – Supporting Effective Instruction: Professional development for educators, including stipends for core subject areas and teacher/principal preparation ($2,000,000)
- Title III-A – English Language Acquisition: Support for English learners and bilingual education ($1,300,000)
- Title IV-A – Student Support and Academic Enrichment: Including dual enrollment and enrichment opportunities ($3,100,000)
- Title IV-B – 21st Century Community Learning Centers ($1,600,000)
- Adult Basic and Literacy Education: Programs supporting adult learners ($1,300,000)
