WESLACO, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The Better Business Bureau of South Texas and the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles are warning the public of scam text messages.
The BBB says people are receiving text messages saying they have outstanding traffic tickets that need to be paid. If not, then the message says you will be reported to the DMV, and your vehicle registration will be suspended.
"The problem with this is that what consumers need to be very aware of is where this text message is coming from. If you look at the phone number it has on that particular text message, a number that is probably from another country, because it starts with six, three, and then a full number," said Hilda Martinez, Better Business Bureau of South Texas.
Martinez says to be cautious. Do not give out any personal information. If you become a victim, they will try to help, but there is no guarantee.
