SAN JUAN — The PSJA High lineup was relentless in a 13-3 six-inning win over Weslaco High on Friday at C.V. Cain Field in San Juan to keep the Bears unbeaten in District 31-6A play.

PSJA improved to 20-2 overall and 6-0 in district, while Weslaco dropped to 14-8 overall and 3-3 in district.

PSJA led 3-2 after two and a half innings before putting together the offensive explosion. The Bears finished with 14 hits as a team and scored runs in all six innings including three in the third, fourth and sixth innings.

“When it got close, we got that energy and that fight and we just came right back,” PSJA High head coach Marco Guajardo said. “Weslaco is a great team and I knew it was going to be a dog fight. They’re tough, they got some guys that can hit, but Jacob (Delgadillo) settled down. He started dealing and started working the curveball really well and started controlling it and that helped him a lot.”

Pitcher Jacob Delgadillo led PSJA with a 3-for-4 game and one RBI. He also pitched six innings and allowed two earned runs off six hits and two walks while striking out nine.

He was one of eight Bears batters to register a hit in the win and one of five players with a multi-hit game.

“We relied on our bats a lot. Our bats provided 13 runs, and what more can you ask for as a pitcher?” Delgadillo said. “Usually you want five or six runs, you think you’re good, but 13 runs? Can’t beat that. We’re just taking everything game by game and that’s our goal, to get to the end and win a district championship.”

PSJA’s Matt Azuara, Zeke Garza, James Cansino and Jai Arenas all had two hits apiece. Jesse Garza finished 1-for-3 with two RBI and one run, while TJ Ayala went 1-for-2 with three RBI and one run.

Weslaco’s Avel Salinas and Joseph Banda led the Panthers with one hit and one RBI each. Toby Perez went 1-for-3 with one walk and two runs scored.

While the win was significant for the Bears as they stayed undefeated in 31-6A competition, the victory also marked career win No. 300 for PSJA’s head coach Guajardo. The team celebrated by dumping a cooler of water on him after the final out.

“I’ll tell you what, it’s not easy. Being from here, playing for the Bears and then coaching here, starting as an assistant and then taking over and now in my 15th season reaching 300, it’s a hell of a milestone,” Guajardo said. “The years go by so fast and you don’t realize it. We’ve had a lot of good players come through and a lot of them are still playing college ball. It’s just great to see these kids come here and keep playing, and I’m just blessed that I’m able to be here and hopefully for many more to come.”
