Baseball Roundup: Pioneer bounces back against Sharyland

MISSION — Three days after getting shut out by their crosstown rival, the Sharyland Pioneer Diamondbacks settled the score against the Sharyland High Rattlers with a 9-7 victory Friday at Pioneer High School, evening the District 31-5A series at 1-1.

Sharyland knotted the game up at 7-7 in the top of the sixth with an RBI-groundout by Edgar Quintanilla and scored another run on an error which allowed Nic Valdez to come across.

With two outs in the bottom half of the sixth, Pioneer’s Fernando Gonzalez drew a four-pitch walk and Frankie Villa followed with a two-run home run to left field to put the Diamondbacks up 9-7.

Pioneer pitcher Ruben Lopez closed the show with a 1-2-3 seventh inning after a line out, pop out and strikeout for the exclamation point.

Pioneer’s Villa finished 2-for-4 with two RBI, one home run and one run scored, while Martin Moreno also went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run. Gonzalez walked three times, scored three times and drove in one run.

Sharyland’s Quintanilla led the Rattlers with a 2-for-4 day and three RBI. Valdez went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs.

Next for Pioneer (12-10, 8-4) is a two-game series against McAllen Rowe. Game 1 is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday at Sharyland Pioneer High School. Sharyland High (15-5-2, 7-3) is back in action against Edinburg Vela at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Edinburg Vela High School in Edinburg.

DISTRICT 32-6A

LOS FRESNOS 10, HARLINGEN HIGH 1: At Los Fresnos, the Falcons soared past the Cardinals on Friday at Los Fresnos High School to remain unbeaten in 32-6A action.

The Falcons jumped on top early with a two-RBI double by left fielder Joaquin Alvarado and a grand slam by shortstop Derek Garcia to go ahead 6-0.

Garcia finished 2-for-4 with four RBI and two runs. Alvarado finished 1-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored.

Los Fresnos ace Joaquin Cavazos pitched four innings and allowed one earned run off four hits and no walks while striking out three. 

Los Fresnos (18-3-2, 3-0) will face Brownsville Hanna next at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Brownsville Hanna High School. Harlingen High (9-11, 0-3) moves on to face San Benito at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Harlingen High School.

DISTRICT 30-5A

LA JOYA PALMVIEW 3, MISSION VETERANS 2: At Mission, the Lobos scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to defeat the Patriots in walk-off fashion Friday at La Joya Palmview High School.

The Lobos and Patriots played a 15-inning thriller on Tuesday that lasted more than five hours and ended with 3-1 Palmview win. On Friday, the Lobos came through late once again.

Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the seventh, Palmview’s Joseph Martinez led the inning off with a walk and Jaime Cordova singled to put runners on first and second. The Lobos loaded the bases two outs later after Jorge Garza was hit by a pitch.

Palmview shortstop Mateo Garcia stepped to the plate and took one ball before Martinez scored on a wild pitch to make it a 2-1 Mission Veterans lead. With the tying run and third and game-winning run at second, Garcia doubled to left field to bring in both runs for the walk-off victory.

Garcia finished 2-for-4 with two RBI. Pitcher Osi Lopez went 6.2 innings and allowed two earned runs of six hits and three walks with five strikeouts.

Mission Veterans catcher Chris Ramos went 2-for-3 with two RBI to lead the Patriots.

Next for Palmview (12-6, 10-0) is Mission High at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Mission High School in Mission.

Mission Veterans is set to face Laredo Cigarroa at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Mission Veterans High School in Mission.
