EDINBURG, Texas (ValleyCentral) — With thirteen new projects underway at UTRGV it is a signal that the Vaqueros are moving toward the future. One project underway is the fieldhouse atrium.
“I mean, it's just a culmination of the last 18 months for us, we've been looking at renderings and seeing holes being dug, and now the beams are up, and it's just a matter of time before we get in there and get to really experience it,” said Todd Lowery Head Volleyball Coach at UTRGV.
UTRGV hopes that when the renovated fieldhouse is complete, it will not only serve as the new home for current athletes but also for recruits.
“When you have a crown jewel like this and something that you can truly show recruits, a sign of, you know, not only an environment that they're going to be in every single day, but also just a sign of intent, right,” said Kahil Fennell UTRGV Men’s Basketball Coach. “I think it just signifies intent for this athletics department and what we're trying to be and what we're going to be moving forward.”
Moving forward but not forgetting where you come from
The project will keep the fieldhouse’s history and tradition while also modernizing it.
“It was a big deal when this thing opened in 1969 but then you think about all the events, all the games, all the matches, everything that's happened over that 5060, year span,” said Chasse Conque UTRGV Director of Athletics. “Think about the coaches and the student athletes that have come through this building. It means a lot to a lot of people.”
The fieldhouse atrium is expected to be completed in the Spring of 2025.
