LOS FRESNOS, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Derek Garcia made the most of his time at Los Fresnos, winning four district titles. In his junior and senior campaigns, he was named District 32- 6A MVP.
“It means even more because we won, and the team was great, and we ended up going on deep playoff runs,” said Derek Garcia, THSBCA All-Star. “And it's crazy, because we've had many great players here at Los Fresnos Falcons, and I'm one of the first ones to do it back to back.”
Derek’s stellar play earned him a call-up to the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association All-Star Game. He is the first Falcon to receive the honor.
“Did anybody think I was going to get voted? probably not, but the fact that I got voted, it's insane,” said Garcia. “It's amazing. And I just kept working. And, you know, the fruition and the blessings they all came at the very end.”
Primarily a shortstop, Derek has also played the outfield and pitched for the Falcons.
“I think it's important, especially at the next level, because you got to play wherever you are wanted,” said Garcia. “And it's amazing, because if shortstops taken, you got second base, you got third base, or the outfield. So it's great to play all positions.”
Derek will play collegiately at Texas A&M International in Laredo, and he will be missed at Los Fresnos.
“He's one of those kids that just adapted to the game and wherever we needed him, we would put him, and he didn't complain, and just did everything in the right way and just kept working,” said Rene Morales, Los Fresnos Baseball Coach.
