MCALLEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — AT&T distributed 100 laptops to the McAllen Chamber of Commerce, which were given to 10 nonprofit organizations across the Rio Grande Valley on Wednesday.
The event highlighted AT&T's commitment to addressing the digital divide, with a pledge of $5 billion to connect 25 million people to high-speed internet by 2030.
"Today's initiative is about ensuring that those laptops get into the hands of those who need them because, as you know, the laptops are a vehicle to help people achieve their goals, whether it's school goals, whether it's learning new skills, whether it's applying for jobs, or participating in the digital economy, said Mario Barragan, Director of External and Legislative Affairs for AT&T Texas.
Community leaders and volunteers helped distribute the laptops, including State Representatives Armando Martinez and Sergio Muñoz, Jr., McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos, and Cynthia Sakulenzki, President & CEO of the Rio Grande Valley Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.
By providing these laptops, AT&T and Compudopt aim to empower McAllen students and families with the tools necessary to participate fully in the digital world.
