Ask the Expert: Injury Prevention Tips for a Safe and Fun 4th of July

3 hours ago 13

The Fourth of July is all about fireworks, grilling, poolside fun, and spending time with family and friends. But with all the excitement, it’s easy to forget about safety—which is just as important to ensure your holiday doesn’t end in a trip to the ER. Here are some quick tips to help keep everyone safe this Independence Day.

Fireworks Safety

Fireworks are a staple of July 4th festivities, but they can be dangerous when not handled properly. Never let kids play with them unsupervised, and always light fireworks one at a time, keeping a bucket of water or hose nearby just in case. Don’t try to relight a firework that doesn’t go off, and make sure you’re lighting them far from houses, dry grass, power lines or anything that can catch fire. Even sparklers can cause burns, so supervise closely.

Grilling Safety

Before you fire up the grill, make sure it’s set up at least 10 feet away from anything flammable. Use long-handled tools, check propane lines for leaks, and never leave the grill unattended. When it comes to using oil fire, never put it out with water. To extinguish an oil fire, immediately turn off the heat source and then smother the flames. You can use a lid, a baking sheet, or a fire blanket to cut off the oxygen supply.

Beat the Heat

Texas heat can be intense this time of year. Stay hydrated by drinking water throughout the day. Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing and reapply sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) every two hours. Watch for signs of heat exhaustion—such as dizziness, nausea, and headache—and take breaks in the shade or an air-conditioned area.

Stay Safe in the Water

Always supervise children when near water, whether it’s a pool, beach, or lake. Life jackets should be worn while boating, and no one should swim or drive a boat while under the influence. Wear bright colors that are noticeable in different bodies of water. Knowing basic CPR and water rescue techniques could save a life.

Drink Responsibly

If alcohol is part of your celebration, plan ahead for a safe ride home. Use a designated driver or rideshare service. And remember, Cameron, Hidalgo and surrounding counties enforce a “No Refusal” policy for suspected drunk driving.

Don’t Forget the Pets

Keep pets indoors during fireworks to reduce anxiety and prevent them from running away. As an added safeguard, make sure they’re wearing ID tags or are microchipped in case they do get out. Avoid giving them table scraps as some foods can be toxic.

Celebrate smart, stay safe, and enjoy the holiday!
