As cold weather sets in, Edinburg firefighters battle two blazes

1 week ago 46

The Edinburg Fire Department is investigating two unrelated fires that occurred on Wednesday.

The first fire occurred shortly after 9:50 a.m. in the 500 block of Bougainvillea Street, where fire crews found a mobile home fully engulfed in flames, according to a release.

In an effort to stay warm, investigators determined the fire began after the homeowner used a 55-gallon barrel to burn wood inside.

Though the homeowner reported extinguishing the fire before going to bed, the release noted the fire apparently reignited and the homeowner awoke to flames speaking throughout the home.

“Thanks to the quick response of Edinburg firefighters, the fire was contained, and no injuries were reported,” the release stated. “The home, however, sustained significant damage.”

The second fire occurred shortly after 1:30 p.m. in the 2100 block of Martin Street, where fire crews brought the blaze under control within 10 minutes of arrival as well as safely evacuating all occupants.

According to the release, Edinburg police were also at the scene and found a woman who claimed that a man started the fire. Officers made contact with the suspect, with the release noting he appeared intoxicated and was holding a lighter. He was detained for further questioning.

No injuries were reported, but the release stated that the cause of the fire remains undetermined at this time.

Both fires continue to be under investigation.

Fire Chief Omar Garza is reminding residents to stay safe when trying to keep warm during the cold and provided the following tips:

>> Use proper heating devices designed for indoor use;

>> Keep space heaters at least three feet away from flammable materials;

>> Never leave a fire or heat source unattended; and

>> Avoid using open flames or improvised heating methods inside your home.
