The Edcouch-Elsa Yellow Jackets saw their most winningest season since 2016 end in a 38-3 defeat against the Boerne Greyhounds in a Region IV-5A DII area round playoff game Thursday at Shirley Field in Laredo.

Edcouch-Elsa finishes the year 9-3 overall after winning its first district title since 2013. Boerne (9-3) advances to the regional semifinals to face the winner of Alice and Victoria West.

The Yellow Jackets dropped down 10-0 early before putting together their best drive of the game. Pinpoint passing from quarterback Elijah Trevino to receiver Brandon Morales and running from Ayden Mercado and Aydan Garcia moved Edcouch-Elsa inside the Boerne 10-yard line.

Edcouch-Elsa trailed 17-0 at the break before finally getting on the board late in the fourth quarter after Jesus Ramirez drilled a 53-yard field goal to make it a 31-3 game.

The momentum flipped almost instantly, with an injury to Lopez and a 28-0 run by the Knights turning it into a three possession game less than halfway through the first quarter.
