Area Roundup: Harlingen South, PSJA High punch tickets to Sweet 16

The Harlingen South Hawks and PSJA High Bears earned area round playoff victories on Saturday to join the Rio Grande City Rattlers as Valley teams advancing to next week’s regional semifinals. Here’s how the Hawks and Bears made it happen.

CLASS 6A DII – BEST-OF-THREE SERIES

PSJA High def. Cibolo-Steele 2-1

At Alice, PSJA dropped Game 1 of its series against Cibolo-Steele on Thursday, but that didn’t stop the Bears from storming back to steal the series following a pair of wins Saturday. 

In Game 2, Arieanna Hernandez tossed a complete game and allowed one earned run off five hits with no walks and three strikeouts.

Adlemi Rodriguez drove in all three of PSJA’s runs with a three-run double to center in the top of the sixth to send the series into a third game.

In the deciding Game 3, PSJA put together a four-run fourth inning and closed its day at the plate with a four-run seventh for a 9-4 victory. Arianna Lugo, Alexa Avila and Amerie Vega finished with two RBI each, while Rodriguez, Azul Rios and Kaylie Lopez all had one.

PSJA (30-4) will meet Cedar Ridge (22-4) in next week’s regional semifinals. Game details are to be announced. Cedar Ridge swept San Antonio Harlan in the area round to set up the third round matchup against PSJA.

At Harlingen, Harlingen South played host to Flour Bluff in Game 3 of their series Saturday and climbed out of an early hole to sting the Hornets 12-7 for the area round win.

In Game 3, South trailed 5-1 after one and a half innings, but the Hawks exploded with eight runs in the bottom half of the second to set the tone for the rest of the contest.

The Hawks powered their way to 12 runs off 10 hits and 11 walks.

Jaylin Mata finished 2-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored, while Kara Jensen went 1-for-4 with three RBI, two runs and one walk.

Lexi Sandoval, Angela Perez, Georgia Chapa and Evette Garcia also drove in one run apiece for the Hawks.

Harlingen South (22-6) will meet Smithson Valley (22-1) in next week’s regional semifinals. Game details are to be announced. Smithson Valley swept South San Antonio in the area round to set up the third round matchup against Harlingen South.

Buda Johnson def. Weslaco High 2-1

At Corpus Christi, defending Class 6A state champion Weslaco High battled back from a Game 1 loss to send its series against Buda Johnson into a third game on Saturday, but the Panthers couldn’t keep up with the Jaguars as they fell 12-1 in Game 3 at Cabaniss Field in Corpus Christi. 

In Weslaco’s Game 2 win, the Panthers plated two runs in the first and two more in the fourth en route to a 5-4 victory.

Roberta Rodirugez finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run. Dayla Hinojosa, Clarissa Mejia and Sophia Mejia finished with one RBI apiece.

Madelynn Cantu pitched a complete game to earn the win in Game 2 with four earned runs off seven hits and one walk across seven innings.

The District 31-6A champion Weslaco Panthers finish their season 21-11 overall.
