HARLINGEN — Harlingen High’s track and field programs have a long history of excellence, producing numerous championship teams.
This year has been no different, with the boys and girls programs sweeping the team district titles a week ago. They continued to dominate during the area meet, with both teams capturing team championships for a second straight week.
The boys team racked up 206 points for a near 100-point victory over Los Fresnos, who finished second with 109 points. The girls team tallied 147 points to beat Los Fresnos (97) for the team title.
Harlingen High captured a total of 15 gold medals during the meet, with the boys team bringing in nine and the girls hauling in six.
While the Cardinals boys and girls team dominated the team standings, several athletes delivered strong individual performances during the two-day meet. Here’s a look at some of the top performances from the Area 31/32-6A track and field championships.

Jyazian Moore, Harlingen High: The Cardinals sophomore secured three regional berths during the area meet, including a pair of gold medals during Wednesday’s field events.
The lanky athlete kicked off the area meet by winning gold in the high jump, recording a mark of 6 feet, 2 inches. He added his second gold during the long jump, recording a jump of 22-8.25 for the win.
Moore capped off his individual events with a silver medal performance during the 400-meter dash, clocking in at 50.38.

Saul Ramirez, Weslaco High: After missing out on a regional appearance last year, Ramirez is set to return this season, securing a spot at next week’s regional meet in both the 200- and 400-meter dash.
The junior runner cruised past the competition during the 400-meter run Thursday, clocking in at 49.19 for the win. Harlingen High’s Moore was the next closest, coming in nearly a second behind Ramirez.
Ramirez added a second regional berth by edging his teammate Andres Valdez for the gold during the 200-meter dash. The junior won the event with a time of 22.19.
Ramirez’s last regional appearance came during his freshman campaign in 2023, qualifying in the 400-meter dash.

Zachary Lamar, Harlingen High: Lamar continued his strong senior season by adding a pair of gold medals during the area championships, coming in first in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs.
The senior has been on a tear this championship season, winning double gold during the district meets as well.
He followed up his double gold by setting a personal best during the 1,600-meter run, finishing in 4:26.21 for the win. Lamar’s first gold came during Day 1 of the meet, finishing in 9:39.90 to win the 3,200-meter run.
The 2024 state cross country qualifier is headed to his second straight regional track meet, qualifying in both events last year as well.

Melissa Kotzur, Edinburg North: The Cougars’ track warrior continued to shine during the area meet, earning regional bids in all four of her individual events.
Kotzur, a senior, kicked off the area meet with a pair of golds during the field events, winning the long jump and triple jump. The Cougars star recorded a jump of 18 feet during the long jump and a mark of 36-5.5 during the triple jump.
She continued to shine during the running finals Thursday, adding a pair of medals to bring her individual meet total to four. Kotzur finished first during the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.54, adding a silver during the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.30.
Kotzur finished the meet with the most individual regional bids among Class 6A athletes.

Asante Stewart, La Joya High: Like Kotzur, Stewart put on a show during the area meet, coming away with three regional bids during Thursday’s running finals.
The Coyotes senior swept the girls distance events during the meet, finishing in 5:27.70 and 12:01.32 for first in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs, respectively.
Stewart’s third regional berth came during the 800-meter run, winning the silver in the event with a time of 2:23.02. Harlingen High’s Brianna Venegas won the race with a time of 2:20.92.
Stewart is set to make her second straight regional appearance in the 800- and 1,600-meter runs next week, with her 1,600-meter regional berth the first of her career in the event.

Alana Rouquette, Harlingen High: Rouquette is no stranger to regional meets, qualifying for the Region IV-6A championships during her sophomore and junior seasons.
The Stephen F. Austin signee is heading back once again, qualifying for the meet once again in the 100- and 300-meter hurdles.
Rouquette just missed out on a gold during her first race of the night Thursday, finishing .01 seconds behind Los Fresnos’ Laylah Galvan for second. Galvan finished in 14.76, with Rouquette right behind in 14.77.
The senior hurdler came back and dominated in the 300-meter hurdles not long after, running away with the gold in a time of 43.83.
Rouquette now turns to her attention to next week’s regional championships, looking to get to the state meet for the first time in her career.
