Another cold front brings thunderstorm risk to the Rio Grande Valley

HARLINGEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) —A moderate cold front is set to sink south through the Valley Saturday night and is expected to generate some rain and maybe a few thunderstorms.

This storm system will move into the Valley after 6 p.m. and will generate at least a 40% chance of rain and thunderstorms. It is unlikely any rain will be enough to quench the Valley's thirst.

The chance for rain will ramp up through midnight as the cold front, leading edge of cooler, drier air, slips south of the Valley.

The Storm Prediction Center is placing Most of the Rio Grande Valley, east of Mission, in the lowest category for severe weather threat. As the frontal boundary pushes through the atmosphere, it may bubble up enough for a few aggressive storms.

The greatest threat from any potential severe thunderstorms would be strong gusty winds, frequent lightning, brief heavy downpours, and small hail.

The good news is the storm system will open up a north wind on Sunday, allowing more mild, dry air to flow into Deep South Texas. The best news is that we all get an extra hour of sleep by setting our clocks back an hour on Saturday night.
