BROWNSVILLE, Texas (ValleyCentral) — A bronze sculpture of legendary aviator Amelia Earhart will soon be unveiled at Dean Porter Park in Brownsville.

According to the Dean Porter Park Renovation Inc. Committee, the 52-inch sculpture, created by Gary Lee Price in 2018, depicts the legendary aviator seated on a park bench.

Engraved on the bench is Earhart's quote, “Everyone has oceans to fly, if they have the heart to do it. Is it reckless? Maybe. But what do dreams know of boundaries?”

The quote captures the adventurous spirit and courage for which Earhart was known, according to the committee.

Along with the statue, the committee hopes to raise awareness about Earhart's ties to Brownsville. Earhart received her commercial transport pilot’s license at what is now known as the Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport.

The statue will be accompanied by a plaque with a brief account of Earhart’s Brownsville connection.
