BROWNSVILLE, Texas (ValleyCentral) — An all-girls team at Oliviera Middle School in Brownsville is celebrating their win at the Greenpower USA competition in Alabama.
The local team, Ole Beta Racing, placed third out of 163 teams in the nation.
They were the only all-girls team at the competition.
During the competition, each team was required to build a greenpower car and race 35 laps against other schools.
"Our greatest achievement is not winning the races. It is introducing the kids to the field of engineering," said Jorge Jasso, Team Sponsor for Ole Beta Racing. "These girls kept at the level of the car at an optimum."
The Brownsville Independent School District praised the team for its achievement.
"From building their own Greenpower car to proudly representing BISD as the only all-girls team at nationals, they truly are a powerhouse," the district announced. "Brownsville ISD is proud of our students and teachers. Way to represent!"
