Beginning Monday, Edinburg CISD will be relocating the remainder of students from Canterbury Elementary School to the Edinburg Recreation Center for the rest of the school year, a move that comes after traces of E. coli were found in the school’s floorboards.
During a news conference Monday, attorney Benjamin Castillo who represents the district said third party testing found trace amounts of E. coli from a floor sewage overflow during cleaning efforts last weekend. This led to a temporary closure of certain grade levels, which has now expanded.
“This decision supports the next phase of ongoing restoration efforts at the Canterbury campus,” the district said in a statement Thursday. “All current areas in use at Canterbury Elementary have met public health standards, and results confirmed no immediate threat to students or staff. However, this relocation will provide our families with additional peace of mind and ensure that restoration crews can complete repairs swiftly and without classroom disruption.”
The relocation affects the remaining classrooms still operating at the campus. Pre-K 3, 4, first and second grade classrooms — more than 260 students — were already relocated to Freddy Gonzalez Elementary on Tuesday.
“Our highest priority has always been the health, safety, and well-being of our
students,” ECISD Superintendent Mario Salinas said. “This temporary relocation allows us to accelerate the restoration process while continuing to provide a stable, high-quality learning environment. We appreciate the continued support and understanding of our Canterbury families.”
The city of Edinburg said in a statement that approximately 400 students will be housed in the city’s facilities with all logistics, including meals, managed by the district.
“We are proud to stand with ECISD during this time,” Edinburg Mayor Ramiro Garza Jr said. “The (c)ity is doing everything we can to support the district’s efforts to keep students safe and learning. This partnership shows how much we value our children, their education, and their future.”
