HARLINGEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — September is Deaf Awareness Month, and Lisa Lara with Deaf World at the McAllen Independent School District discusses the Deaf World 2025 event on Friday.

Lara, a former English teacher at Brown Middle School, now teaches deaf students and emphasizes the importance of early communication.

"This is an event that we have just because we want to share deaf awareness with our community. We want people to learn about deafness. We also want our students and our parents to learn about the resources that are available, and so we have information booths. We have different vendors that are there, and we want people to come in and learn a little bit of sign, so it's just a good time to share, to bring your kids, and learn about deafness and learn some sign language," said Lara.

Services start from age zero to 21, with a Parent Infant program teaching sign language and device management. Early intervention is crucial to establishing language foundations and closing the communication gap.

The event will take place on Friday, Sept. 26, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Achieve Early College High School in McAllen with a theme of "Sign Language Around The World."
