A 76-year-old McAllen man was killed when the driver of a semi-truck drove past a stop sign and traffic light and crashed into his car south of San Juan on Friday.
Rogelio Benavidez-Urrea, 76, of McAllen, was killed in the crash at around 1:48 p.m. after the Honda UVP he was driving westbound on U.S. 281 Military Highway was struck by the semi, the Texas Department of Public Safety said in a news release.
DPS described the semi as an International tractor trailer that was traveling northbound on Stewart Road and approaching 281 at the time of the crash.
“A Honda UVP passenger car (occupied by one male driver) was traveling westbound on US 281 Military Road approaching Stewart Road. The driver of the International semi-trailer disregarded a red flashing traffic light (with stop sign) and collided with the Honda,” DPS said.
The driver of the semi-truck, who has not been identified, was transported to South Texas Health System McAllen for injuries sustained in the crash. Benavidez-Urrea died from his injuries, according to DPS.
Authorities say they’re investigating the crash.
