$75K bond issued to Brownsville drunk driver, leaving child in critical condition

BROWNSVILLE, Texas (ValleyCentral) — One man is in custody following a three-vehicle overnight accident in Brownsville, which resulted in a woman and a child with serious injuries and a child in critical condition.

Raul Rodriguez, 26, was charged with three counts of intoxication assault with a motor vehicle causing serious bodily injury, according to a news release from the Brownsville Police Department.

At approximately 11:06 p.m. on Friday, July 26, authorities responded to a major three-vehicle crash at the intersection of W. University Boulevard and S. Expressway 77/83.

A preliminary investigation revealed that a blue pickup truck, driven by Rodriguez, was going southbound on S. Expressway 77, when police say he ran a red light and hit two vehicles in the intersection, the release stated.

At the scene, responding officers observed Rodríguez showed multiple signs of impairment, including physical indicators and behaviors that indicated he was intoxicated.

Authorities arrested Rodriguez following a field investigation, the release stated.

The crash resulted in multiple serious injuries that were reported, including two young children and one woman.

All the victims were taken to the hospital for medical care. Authorities say one of the children is reported to be in critical condition.

Rodriguez was arraigned Saturday morning and charged with three counts of intoxication assault with a motor vehicle, causing serious bodily injury, a third-degree felony.

His bond was set at $75,000.

This is an ongoing investigation.
