HARLINGEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The Texas Veterans Commission (TVC) on Tuesday presented $4,325,000 in grants to 14 organizations to support services for veterans and their families in South Texas, Coastal Bend, and Harlingen.
The grants, part of TVC's Fund for Veterans' Assistance, aim to provide services to an estimated 2,170 veterans across a 19-county region. The funding will support a variety of services, including financial assistance, housing, peer support, and skill-based training.
The grants include $300,000 for financial assistance in Cameron County, $400,000 for financial assistance in the city of Harlingen, and $500,000 for Housing for Texas Heroes in Harlingen. Other recipients include the Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse Coastal Bend, CPLC Texas, and Goodwill Industries of South Texas, among others.
Since 2009, TVC has awarded over $359 million in grants through more than 1,600 FVA grants, supporting a wide range of services from emergency financial assistance to transportation and legal services.
Funding for these grants is primarily generated by the Texas Lottery's games designated for veteran support, as well as donations made during vehicle registration and when obtaining hunting or fishing licenses.
The grants are expected to significantly impact the veteran community in South Texas, providing essential services and support to improve their quality of life. Veterans in need can find assistance through organizations listed on the TVC website.
