MCALLEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The U.S. Department of Homeland Security confirmed three law enforcement personnel were injured in a shooting at a Border Patrol sector annex in McAllen.

The alleged gunman, 27-year-old Michigan resident Ryan Louis Mosqueda, opened fire at the federal building before 6 a.m. Monday.

Authorities reported Mosqueda attempted to enter the annex and fired dozens of rounds at law enforcement.

Officer Ismael Garcia, a 10-year veteran of the McAllen Police Department, was struck in the knee.

Two Border Patrol employees also sustained injuries and are being treated at an area hospital.

Law enforcement officers returned fire and killed Mosqueda at the scene.

“Yesterday’s heinous and unprovoked attack in McAllen could have been a bloodbath if not for the fearless actions of Border Patrol and McAllen law enforcement," said DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is leading the investigation in coordination with the FBI.
