$2.4M in Methamphetamine seized in Hidalgo County, says DPS

WESLACO, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The Texas Department of Public Safety seized more than $2.4 million worth of methamphetamine during a commercial vehicle inspection in Hidalgo County, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

At approximately 4 p.m. this Monday, the Texas Department of Public Safety responded to a report from U.S Customs and Border Protection Agents at the Pharr Port of Entry of a suspicious 2012 Freightliner truck driver, states a release from the Texas Department of Public Safety.

During a commercial vehicle inspection, Border Protection Agents suspected the driver, Luis Fernando Sarinana Matias, 28, of Reynosa, Mexico, of smuggling narcotics.

After a second inspection, DPS Special Agents discovered a false compartment in the vehicle's trailer area, revealing more than 390 bundles of methamphetamine.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the methamphetamine found has an estimated street value of more than $2.4 million.

Sarinana Matias has been arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance.
