Sheriff’s deputies say a Donna man who has been charged with manslaughter, a case authorities say erupted from an assault which began in defense of his daughter, faced a judge Monday for arraignment.

Travis Leon Trevino, 34, was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Jason Pena, who set his bond at $1 million.

According to a Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office news release, deputies responded to a call of aggravated assault at about 5:59 p.m. Dec. 13.

While deputies were dispatched to the 2700 block of Bustamante Street in rural Donna, the release noted the incident occurred earlier that day in the 3200 block of Geronimo Street in rural Weslaco.

Deputies met with the victim’s ex-wife, who explained she traveled to Geronimo Street to drop off her 11-year-old son with his father Isaac Martinez, 41, the release stated, adding that Martinez was reportedly drinking with several men at the time.

The sheriff office said the ex-wife’s daughter asked Martinez for money during the visit, which led to an argument. A man, later identified as Trevino, approached Martinez during the dispute and “confronted him about his behavior towards his daughter,” the release stated.

Trevino then struck Martinez multiple times in the face, causing him to fall, according to witnesses. Martinez’s ex-wife transported him back to his residence on Bustamante Street to seek help for Martinez, the release stated.

The sheriff office said deputies observed Martinez to be unresponsive and with a bloody shirt, which led to him being immediately transported to Knapp Medical Center for medical treatment, then later transferred to South Texas Health System McAllen where he was pronounced dead.

According to the release, an autopsy determined that Martinez’s death resulted directly from injuries sustained in the assault.

Investigators collected witness statements and recovered physical evidence at the scene on Geronimo Street, and charged Trevino with manslaughter.

Trevino remains in custody at the Hidalgo County Adult Detention Center.

With the investigation ongoing, the sheriff’s office is encouraging anyone with information related to the case to call (956) 383-8114. Those wishing to remain anonymous can call Hidalgo County Crime Stoppers at (956) 668-8477. Anonymous tipsters can also provide information using the P3 TIPS app.
