EDINBURG, Texas – A rematch is in store in the U.S. Congressional District 15 general election.

Monica De la Cruz, a Republican, and Michelle Vallejo, a Democrat, faced each other in the 2022 election. Now, both have come through their respective primaries with ease.

Rep. De la Cruz picked up 88.21 percent of the vote. Vallejo secured 74.70 percent of the vote.

“This past year I have had the honor of being a voice for all South Texans,” De la Cruz said, after her victory in a four-candidate race was announced. “Every day I bring with me to the nation’s capital the common sense, the values, and the corazón of South Texas — and together we are making a difference.”

Looking ahead the the general election, De la Cruz said: “I take nothing for granted and I intend to earn your vote this fall. Representing you is the greatest honor of my life and with your support, and God’s blessing, we will continue fighting for nuestra gente in the People’s House. God bless you. Que Dios los bendiga.”

Vallejo was in a two-candidate race in her primary. After her victory was announced, Vallejo, a small business owner, said:

“It’s clear that our campaign to lower costs for families, expand access to affordable and quality health care, protect Social Security and Medicare, and restore reproductive freedoms resonated with voters and led to our resounding victory.

“My family has lived our Sueño Americano, and I want to make sure the next generation of South Texans has the same opportunity to lift themselves up as we did.”

Michelle Vallejo is entering the 2024 general election with the full faith and support of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee as a Red to Blue Candidate.

Texas Democratic Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa, a Rio Grande Valley native, said CD 15 is a key battleground seat that has been by targeted by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

Hinojosa said Vallejo is “deeply connected to the real challenges facing families in her district.” He said personal story “resonates with South Texans, who trust her to champion their interests, offering a stark departure from the extremist agenda of MAGA supporter Monica De La Cruz.”
